Soon, Purrina and Zara found a name that fitted the puppy- Rainbow. A few months later, Rainbow was about the maturity of a 12-year-old. But something horrible happened.

Zara rang the doorbell. Purrina was doing her homework, but she always ran down to open the door no matter what.

‘Oh hi, Zara! I was just doing my homework.’ She greeted.

Zara, who was very fond of Rainbow, said, ‘Hello, Purrina. I have some free time, now. I say, where’s Rainbow?’

Purrina laughed. ‘Oh, silly you. Didn’t I just tell you that I was studying? Hmm- Where is Rainbow, then?’

Mrs. Jones came running down and said stuttering, ‘R-Rainbow! She’s gone!’

Tears of grief and hopelessness splished down Purrina’s cheeks. ‘But, that’s the first and last thing I got from grandpa! H-he’s gone, n-now..’ Zara was shocked and just stared at the ground. ‘Mrs. J-Jones! Are you sure?’ She stammered. ‘To think of her now, I really grown quite fond of Rainbow.’ Purrina looked at her with new respect. To hear Zara choose the word fond from all the other words! She had never heard her say fond! Zara never says something like that unless she meant it!

Rainbow had seen the week before, Purrina and her brother played pirate island, a game that they made up. It included a treasure map that they drew. Purrina was 11 and her brother Chad was 7. Rainbow saw the map and thought it would lead her to some sort of treasure. Rainbow was a pup with no brains. So, she ran off into the forest. She saw a house that smelt like roses.

‘What is this place?’

She walked slowly and sat at the door. She barked a happy bark because that house resembled Purrina’s house. The door swung open. Rainbow scuttled in. There was a portal! Rainbow looked back and, the door slammed behind her. Thump! Rainbow kicked and scratched and- oww! Her paw hit the doorknob. She had no way out. But, the portal! She could go through it! She went through it and she felt a bit different. Her tail disappeared! She turned into a human! Nobody saw her, but there were people around.

A girl in the corner spotted her and said loudly, ‘Hey, you there! You don’t belong here.’

But a girl in a striped shirt saw Rainbow’s innocent face and stammered, ‘No, she’s my… um, friend! Heh heh.’

The other girl smiled. ‘Very well, then.’

The girl in the striped shirt was around the age of 12. She said, ‘Hello. I’m Lily. I uhh, guess we should be friends or…’

Rainbow answered right before Lily could even finish. ‘Hello! I’m Rainbow. I’d love to be your friend!’ Lily was touched by this kind, sweet voice.

‘It’s getting awfully dark. Are you lost? Come over to my place. It’s very cozy.’ Rainbow shyly accepted this invitation. Sure enough, Lily’s house was very cozy.

OOhh! What a nice house!

Rainbow forgot all about Purrina. Now, she was looking forward to life at Rainbow City!
